How to show up on Google as a plumber in Montreal

Local search is your best salesperson

When someone types "emergency plumber Montreal" into Google, the top results get the vast majority of clicks. If you're not in those results, you're invisible.

The good news: local SEO for a construction contractor is more within reach than you think. Unlike large companies fighting over national keywords, you're targeting a specific area — and that changes everything.

Step 1: Create your Google Business Profile

It's free, and it's the foundation. Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is what gets you into the "local pack" — the 3 results with the map at the top of Google.

What to fill in

  • The exact name of your business (no added keywords)
  • A complete, verified address
  • A local phone number (not a 1-800)
  • Up-to-date business hours
  • A precise primary category (e.g. "Plumber" rather than "Construction company")
  • Your service area if you travel to clients
  • Photos of your work, your team, your vehicles

Client reviews make the difference

Google favours businesses with lots of positive reviews. After every job:

  • Text the client a link to your Google profile
  • Ask them to leave a review mentioning the type of work and the city
  • Reply to every review (positive or negative)

Aim for 20+ reviews with a rating of 4.5 or higher. That's often enough to lead in your area.

Step 2: Have an optimized website

Your Google Business Profile puts you on the map. Your website gives you the credibility and details that turn a visitor into a client.

The essentials

  • Your trade + your city in the title: "Residential plumbing in Montreal", not "Welcome to our website"
  • One page per service: emergencies, bathroom renovation, water heaters, drain cleaning — each page targets a different search
  • Your service area clearly shown: list the cities and neighbourhoods you cover
  • Your phone number, tappable on mobile
  • A quote request form for after-hours requests

Technical optimization

  • Fast site (loads in under 3 seconds)
  • Mobile-friendly (most local searches happen on a phone)
  • HTTPS (the padlock in the address bar)
  • Title and description tags optimized for each page

Step 3: Be listed in local directories

Google checks that your information is consistent across the web. The more your name, address and phone number (NAP) appear identically on different sites, the more Google trusts you.

Directories to prioritize

  • Yellow Pages (yellowpages.ca)
  • Yelp (yelp.ca)
  • Houzz (for renovation contractors)
  • RBQ (your entry in the Régie du bâtiment licence registry)
  • Quebec enterprise register (Registraire des entreprises)

What matters: use exactly the same name, address and phone number everywhere.

Step 4: Publish content regularly

Google favours active sites. You don't need a new article every week — one a month is enough:

  • Photos of your latest projects
  • Maintenance tips for your clients ("How to prevent frozen pipes in winter")
  • News about your business

Every page of content is a new door into Google.

How long before you see results?

Let's be honest: local SEO isn't instant.

  • Google Business Profile: results in 2–4 weeks
  • Optimized website: first results in 1–3 months
  • Leading your area: 6–12 months of steady effort

But unlike paid ads, the results last. Once you rank well, you get calls without paying for every click.
